Description

Among the hardships caused by the Civil War was a shortage of coins;  the lower denominations were needed for everyday commerce. These "shinplasters" were the solution. They are small notes whose face values are a fraction of the dollar. Beginning in 1862, currency was issued for 3, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents. The U.S. Government issued fractional currency until 1876. Confederate states, banks, railroads and other businesses also issued their own small-denomination notes.  Includes one 25-cent note.
