During the Civil War, coinage was hoarded when the value of the metal exceeded the face value of the coins. As a result, small change was scarce and day-to-day commerce was seriously threatened. In response to the crisis, in 1862 the government issued small denomination currency, which by definition was worth a fraction of a dollar. The paper currency wore out quickly and were no longer issued after 1876. The 3 cent note during that time could be redeemed at US Post Offices for postage stamps. A Certificate of Authenticity is included.
