The rarest of the Barber Dimes is the 1894-S. Mint records show that only 24 pieces were made, and it is uncertain why this extraordinary issue was struck. Mint Superintendent J. Daggett may have had the dimes minted in anticipation of coinage later in the year. When no coins were later struck, he gave the specimens to friends. No more that a dozen of these coins can be traced to collections today. In 1990 a specimen sold for roughly $400,000. Ten 1894-S dimes still in existence have been preserved in high-grade condition. Only one shows any signs of wear. That particular coin is perhaps one of three dimes that Daggett gave to his daughter Hallie. In later years she said that her father had told her to save the coins because they would be valuable someday, but she immediately spent one for ice-cream. Halle Daggett saved the other two until 1954, when she sold them to a coin dealer. Historians will probably never know all the circumstances that contributed to the minting of this rare coin. But Daggett may have been inspired to make the 1894-S dime by a treatise published by A.G. Heaton. Its title is “The Coinage of the United States Branch Mint”, and it encouraged collectors to take an interest in mint marks for the first time. This book inspired may people to begin saving coins made at branch mints, especially those acknowledged by Heaton to be rare. Perhaps Daggett created an intentional rarity, believing that in time the coins would be valuable.
