In 1858 the director of the mint suggested a design change to the one cent coin as it was difficult to strike. James B. Longacre was selected to design the new one cent coin. Longacre decided to use Liberty on the obverse of the coin. Legend states that he modeled Liberty after his daughter Sarah wearing a headdress of an Indian Chief who visited the mint. No one knows if Sarah was the model as James B. Longacre once stated Venus, a Greek statue, was his inspiration for the design. The reverse was first designed to resemble laurel and then was changed to oak. Composition changes occurred during the 50 year reign of the Indian Head Cent ranging from copper nickel to bronze. The copper nickel Indian Head cents were so light in color they were called white cents. The Indian Head cent was minted from 1859-1909. Each coin is lavishly layered in pure 24k Gold. These coin cuff links have bullet back closures making them very easy to put on. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Tradition has it that Longacre’s young daughter, Sarah, posed for the portrait one day while she was visiting her father at the mint. The apocryphal story claims that an Indian chief was there at the same time and playfully placed his feathered bonnet on her head. Supposedly, Longacre made a quick sketch, which he later used as a model for his copper and gold coin designs
