The Penny Black Stamp is known as the world's first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It was issued in Britain in 1840 and features an image of Queen Victoria. The words "One Penny" shown at the bottom of the stamp signify the amount of the pre-paid postage placed on the stamped letter.
