When President Theodore Roosevelt mandated new themes for United States coins, noted engraver and designer A.A. Weinman created America's first imaginative design for the ten-cent piece. The beautiful Winged Liberty Dime was introduced in 1916, and instantly became one of the most beloved of all American coins. Liberty's cap has wings, symbolizing freedom of thought and giving the coin its popular name, the Mercury Dime.
