Description

By 1857 the cost of making copper coins had risen, and both cents and half cents were unpopular and hardly circulated. The half cent was abandoned and a smaller cent, composed of 88% copper and 12% nickel, was introduced. The new coin, struck for just three years (1856-1858), featured a flying eagle originally designed by Christian Gobrecht in place of the traditional Liberty head.
