Description

Most Americans loved the new Lincoln penny when it was introduced in 1909, the centennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth. For the first time since 1793, a circulating U.S. coin showed a recognizable portrait. Some, however, were outraged. They claimed that the designer, Victor D. Brenner, had made his initials too large at the bottom of the coin. Newspapers caused such a scandal that the Mint Director stopped the presses just days after the coin's release and new, initial-free dies were prepared. Only a small portion of the historic first-year-of-issue Lincoln cents carry the infamous initials. An even smaller portion still exists in Brilliant Uncirculated Condition.
