On April 14, 1912, over 1500 people lost their lives when the British luxury liner struck an iceberg and, in less than three hours, sank to the bottom of the Atlantic. The Lincoln Penny was in only its fourth year of issue, and the Liberty Nickel was minted for the last time the following year.
